Between 1974 and the late 1990s, the federal government imposed a 55 mph speed limit. This reduction in maximum speed probably saved, perhaps, thousands of lives per year. Why not, therefore, reduce the speed limit even further? (It is probably the case that if the government imposed and rigidly enforced a 10 mph speed limit, highway deaths might literally become zero.) Why is there so little support for such legislation?)
