Chevalier de Mr used to bet that he could get at least one 6 in four rolls
Question:
Chevalier de Méré used to bet that he could get at least one 6 in four rolls of a die. He also bet that, in 24 tosses of a pair of dice, he would get at least one 12. He found that he won more often than he lost with the first bet, but not with the second. He did not know why, so he wrote to Pascal seeking the probabilities of these events. What are the probabilities for winning these two games?
