The departments are to be equal in size, 80 X 80 feet, and arranged in a 2 X 3 grid. Assume that the average move distance between two departments is equal to the straight-line distance between the centers of the departments.

For two departments beside each other the distance is 80 feet. Use the squared distance of the two sides to find the square of the distance between the centers of departments that are located diagonally. Assume that the cost per unit of distance is the same for all moves, so cost is not needed. The following table shows the number of trips per week that are expected to occur between departments.

a. Identify the top five priorities for locating departments near each other.

b. Make at least one attempt to locate the departments in accordance with these priorities.

c. Calculate the total distance moved in a week with this arrangement.

d. In class, compare your solution with the solutions found by others.
