PDQ is a fast-casual chicken sandwich and salad chain that was started by Bob Basham, co-founder of Outback Steakhouse and Nick Reader, chief executive of MVP–holdings in Tampa, Florida. The first PDQ restaurant opened on October 30, 2011, and currently, the chain includes four quick-service restaurants in and around the Tampa Bay area. The name PDQ stands for “pretty darn quick” to most people, and the restaurant maintains a dedication to the speedy production of food items; however, PDQ also means “people dedicated to quality,” which serves as the foundation of its operation. PDQ was founded on some of the same principles as both casual dining restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse, as well as fast-food restaurant chain In-N-Out Burger. Both chains are dedicated to similar core beliefs, such as quality products, simplicity of menu, and a slow-growth approach in the beginning of the company’s existence.
The idea for PDQ came when Basham was approached by the owner of a small restaurant in Cornelius, North Carolina called Tenders, which offered chicken tenders and other items similar to what is now offered at PDQ. The owner of Tenders believed that his vision and beliefs were similar to those of Outback’s, and he wanted to create a franchise of restaurants with the same philosophy in mind.
