The Department of Psychiatry in Cambridge Hospital (C'H), Massachusetts, wanted to know the effect of the number of its beds on demand for beds in the local public mental hospital (PH). A study was undertaken for one year that found that average number of in-state mental patients arriving at C'H was 1.44 per day, and average number of out-of-state mental patients arriving at CH was .54 per day (both Poisson). CH had 46 beds for mental patients, [f there was no free bed in C'H, the patient was directed to PH. The average stay in CH was 37.1 days (the length of stay had close-to-Exponential distribution).
