The following is an example of the original McDonald’s procedure for cooking hamburgers:

‘Those grilling the burgers were instructed to put hamburgers down on the grill moving from left to right, creating six rows of six burgers. Because the first two rows are furthest away from the heating element, they were instructed to flip the third row first, then the fourth, fifth, and sixth, before flipping the first two’ (Love, 1986: 141–2).

How would you feel if instructions as detailed as this were to be found in recipe books? Would you follow the instructions:
