Problem 18.8.

The water table lies at a depth of 3 m below the ground level at a site that consists entirely of sands. A 7 m deep excavation is to be made with the use of anchored sheet piles to support the excavation. The tie rod of the anchor will be placed 1 m below the ground, with horizontal spacing of the tie rods being 3 m. The unit weights of the sand above and below the water table are 17.0 kN/m³ and 20.0 kN/m³, respectively. The friction angle of the sand is 35°.
