John Wilson has a PhD in educational psychology and worked in teacher education and training in Scotland before becoming Foundation Professor of Education at Victoria University, Australia in 1992. He worked in human resource development in the education and training sectors in several countries including Bangladesh, Botswana, Canada, Laos and Thailand.

In 2014, he was Asian Development Bank consultant on a project planning assistance in secondary education for the government of Kyrgyzstan.
