Find the mean number of letters in the word taken at random from the rhyme in Exercise
Question:
Find the mean number of letters in the word taken at random from the rhyme in Exercise 1. Compare it with the number 5.1 that in some sources is referred to as the mean length of a word in an English text. Do you find the difference from what you got significant?
Note that in our example, as well as when the mean 5.1 was being computed, each word was counted as many times as it was used. Since the most repeated words, like articles (a, the), pronouns (I, me, ...) are short, the mean is not as large as it would be if we had counted repeated words one time. Compute the mean for our verse in this way. Explain why it is small in comparison with the mean length of words in the English language.
