In a university, 55% of students are females. Consider the probability that in a class of 100 students there will be at most 55 females. Do you expect that this probability is 0.55? Check your guess using software. (Comments: The fact that the “probability of a female” is 0.55, means that on the average there will be 55 females in the class. We see that this does not mean that the probability of having 55 females or less should be 0.55. We discuss it in detail in Section 3.4.1, and for now, let us just keep it in mind.)
