1. Disaster planning for citizen behavior should be something that is decided by both the community and government. Disaster planning for the citizen behavior should be unified so that everyone understands the protocol and there are clear procedures for everyone to follow. Procedures should include household emergency kits that are explained by both news and media to ensure that each home has its own preparedness. This kit can be conducive to each area based on the natural disasters they are most susceptible too and can encouraged to have on hand regularly not just reminded about during disasters. Other things that can also be encouraged for each home are ensuring someone is CPR certified and having home plans for evacuations so that each member or visitor knows them. Community planning can be having drills for disasters and reminders to each resident to have home drills as well so that the plans are practiced and will be easier to implement during disasters. In developing and completing plans as well as ensuring an emergency kit is in the home this will help with better preparedness and mitigation during disasters.
2. Having to supervise an offender who is a risk to his or her family could possibly pose several problems for the probation officer. Like stated in the prompt, a criminal can only be sentenced for the crime they commit, even if the punishment itself is not enough. Ethical dilemmas could arise because probation officers know that more should be done, but do not have the means to do more. They will have to go to sleep every night knowing the families could be harmed or for that matter the families of others. Having to watch those violent offenders more than others, they will be faced to prioritize their time and take focus off of others who may need their help. It is easy to see how both ethical and emotional problems could come about. Not only should probation officers be provided with training on how to deal with more violent offenders, they should also be given some form of defense in order to protect themselves. Furthermore, their job can be very emotionally draining and stressful due to these circumstances and emotional support and services should be provided to them. & n bsp;
3. I agree, the & n bsp; criminal justice field, especially those that deal directly with the offenders, can create emotional instability over the years. I also agree that regardless of the situation probation officers should be able to carry and defend themselves. In these types of situations, probation officers should be able to work with specialized officers in coming together to properly handle the violent offender throughout the supervision. After coming together, there should be some way to present this evidence and recommendations to higher court personnel for further review and more strict guidelines for the offender.
4. I think for almost every profession a college education is necessary. There are so many reasons I believe a college education benefits a police officer. Formal education allows for better behavioral and performance characteristics such as the ability to adapt to situations more creatively without using excessive force. There is so much new technology now where computer skills are a basic requirement and these skills can be acquired at college. English writing courses which are required in college will better prepare a police officer for writing reports correctly and improve writing skills. Many promotions in the police department require tests. College teaches you great test taking skills which can only benefit them in the long run. I believe a college graduate is more mature, better-rounded, has better work ethics and will treat the job as a profession. I do not believe that you must have 4 years of college before you can start the academy, but I do think an associate’s degree should be required to start, with a five year cap to complete the process. There are so many options to complete a degree nowadays. Besides a traditional classroom setting, you can take online classes at your own convenience towards your degree.
I don't think all can be learned at college though. There is valuable experience that is learned on the streets from veterans and supervisors. No amount of college can teach a police officer to be a great police officer. College will help him interpret those rules and laws from the guidebook and all these learned behaviors combined with the knowledge learned on the street/ on patrol will make a person become a great police officer.
