Read the letter from Birmingham Jail written by Martin Luther King and answer and reflect on the following questions.

1. MLK was accused of being an outsider. How does he respond to this? Do you think he was an outsider?

2. Explain the four steps MLK believes are essential in a nonviolent campaign. Were they followed in the Civil Rights actions in Birmingham? Why was negotiation not used instead of protest?

3. Many urged Black Civil Rights leaders to be patient. Many said that change was coming and they should not continue to press. What reasons did MLK give for pressing ahead? Based on the videos assigned this week, do you think he was right?

4. Is it right to break laws when you urge the segregationist to follow laws? Respond directly to MLK’s reasoning. Give an example from our current time of protestors who break laws and apply MLK's reasoning to your example.

5. Why does MLK criticize the white moderate? Is this criticism fair in your opinion?

6. Are the actions of the non- violent movement extreme? How does MLK feel about being labeled an extremist? Would you call him an extremist?

7. Describe a passage that impacted you and explain how and why it did?
