Research three items and compare them with the risks they pose in case of a derailment in a rural town. Look at the status of fire departments in your current counties. This involves an exercise around a notional railroad accident in your counties; and since the train carries hazardous material this becomes an incident regardless of whether any of the transport cars suffer release or leakage. Presume that your counties have had several derailments in the past year and the county commissioners of the region, along with mayors, and fire chiefs (volunteer and paid) want to prepare in case more occur in the future. Some of the towns far from the tracks have less interest, but you need to make the case why this impacts all.

You have high concern over rail cars placarded with as DOT 1267, others with 1203 and others 1017; often all three will exist on trains a half-mile long and occasionally even longer. Recent changes new allow trains to move at up to 49 miles per hour.

1. Write a description to introduce your work.

2. Determine how many miles of active railroad go through your county, and supplement this with a map from the Indiana Maps program.

3. Determine the actual hazard from these three items to ensure you have valid information.

Then build a chart to compare these. Rank these, based on the Emergency Response Guide as to which poses the greatest risk, then the next and the third of these three.

4. Using your chart, then locate the fire departments in your counties using Indiana maps and follow up by doing an internet search to see how many departments have paid firefighters only, volunteer firefighters only, or a mix of the two. Make a recommendation as to whether to build a new fire station or two and where (consider factors such as the road network, bridges, terrain etc - every county has differences).
