2) Policing is susceptible to bribery and other forms of corruption. Many police departments have gone great lengths to maintain integrity standards. The New York City police department devotes an entire bureau to combat, and deter corruption, called the internal affairs bureau (IAB).

Police corruption is a complex issue. Police corruption or the abuse of authority by a police officer, acting officially to fulfill personal needs or wants, is a growing problem in the United States today. Things such as an internal affairs department, a strong leadership organization, and community support are just a few considerations in the prevention of police corruption. an examination of a local newspaper or any police-related publication in an urban city during any given week would most likely have an article about a police officer that got caught committing some kind of corrupt act. Police corruption has increased dramatically with the illegal cocaine trade, with officers acting alone or in-groups to steal money from dealers or distribute cocaine themselves. Large groups of corrupt police have been caught in New York, New Orleans, Washington, dc, and Los Angeles, as well as many other cities. Corruption within police departments falls into 2 basic categories, external corruption and internal corruption. There are many ways to deal with corruption that is emphasized in our textbook. if i could add some other ideas, I would have a special department that checks up on the internal affairs division. They would be a special group of police officers that would be undercover and would routinely check on the department that checks on the officers. My other idea would be to not allow police officers to have steady partners or steady tasks. They would have to rotate who the work with so that they do not get comfortable with one person. I also think that they shouldn't be assigned to one precinct for too long a period of time. They community gets used to one officer and sometimes favors are done for them. They should also rotate their tours of duty. i am only giving suggestions. I am not saying that i agree with all of these. a police officer should be made to feel secure with his partner and know that he has his back at all times. Switching partners does not give him that security. Not all police officers are corrupt. Many more are good rather than bad, but because of the few that choose to be corrupt, the department has to make certain changes.
