Scenario The Humongous Corporation at which you are employed has a 2,500 acre campus with six major buildings and lots of forest. The Vice President for Bigger Profits realizes that the company might be spending too much money on heating and cooling especially for rooms that are not presently occupied (e.g., meeting rooms with no meeting happening right now, exhibition halls without an exhibition at this time, office whose occupants presently are elsewhere) The Vice President realizes she cannot easily acquire any information on how much money the company wastes heating or cooling these rooms. Therefore, she has a sensor placed in each room to detect whether or not there is anyone in the room. She sets up one computer in each building to monitor all the sensors and selectively turn on and off the air conditioning or heating for a room with no one in it for at least ten minutes as well as turn back on the air conditioning or heating when someone enters the room and stays for more than two minutes. The system will also preemptively adjust the temperature of the room to a comfortable level starting ten minutes in advance of any scheduled meetings or other use of the room based on information stored in the company's calendar system Your team is supposed to construct the supporting software which should monitor the sensors for each room in the assigned building and adjust heating and air conditioning as required. As a means of redundancy, the system should also be able to monitor the condition of the dedicated computers in the adjacent buildings and be prepared to take over for (and notify maintenance of) a computer which is not working properly. Finally, in order to justify the expense of the development of the system, it should be able to keep track of the savings that occur because of the Vice President's great idea.
