1. A homeowner in chilly Canada is considering replacing the single-pane storm window in her home with double-pane storm windows and wants to calculate the energy savings on a cold winter day when the outside temperature is 250K and the air temperature in her house is 295K Assuming a window measuring 2m by 4m. The air space between the double panes is 1cm wide and consists of stagnant air (k=0.026W/mk) and the each window pane glass is 0.40cm thick. Convective heat transfer coefficients on the outside surface of the window is 25W/m2K and on the inside surface of the window is 20W/m2K. You may neglect any effects due to radiation and assume that the conductivity of the panes (soda lime glass) are independent of temperature (see appendix in text for value) a. What is the temperature drop that exists across each of the glass panes in the double pane storm window. b. Why is the heat transfer coefficient not relevant for the air space between the windows? c. Compare the heat loss from the house through the double pane storm window with the heat loss under the same conditions except that the window is a single pane with a thickness of 0.40cm
