Question:
1. A soil weighs 1200 kg/m3 loose and 1450 kg/m3 inplace. Find the swell and load factor for the soil.
2. Recommend an appropriate compactor and method of operation such as lift thickness, compactor speed, etc for the following soils. i. Clayey gravel ii. Laterite
3. a A highway contractor has opened a cut in a fine silty sand. Because of the cut location and lack of drainage, surface water has drained into the excavation, leaving the material very wet. Rubber-tyred scrapers are hauling material from the cut to the adjacent fill. The material is being placed in the fill in 20 to 25 cm lifts and compacted by a heavy sheepsfoot roller towed by a crawler tractor. It is apparent that the specified compaction(95% standard AASHTO density) is not being attained. The sheepsfoot roller is not walking out and the scraper tires are causing deep rutting and displacement of the fill material as the they travel over it. What is the causing the compaction problem? What would you suggest to the contractor to improve the compaction operation?
