1) As is well known during the 19'th century a number of American Protestant missionary schools were established in Turkey and other Middle Eastern countries. AUB, AUC and Robert College/Bogazici University in Beirut, Cairo and Istanbul are three well known examples in the Arab world and Turkey respectively. But there were others. In "Academies for Anatolia" (1984) F. A. Stone tells the story of such schools in Anatolia. In particular when discussing the foundation of Central Turkey College of Aintab _ today's Gaziantep_he states that around 1874 Kethuda Zade Haji Taha Gogush Effendi donated a large tract of land to be used as campus and that construction began in 1877....Why would Haji Taha Effendi _ a devout Moslem to judge by his name_ donate land for a Christian missionary school?
