The parallel structure helps emphasize information in the same sentence. I think it helps the sentence flow with ease and clarity. It definitely makes the sentences much easier to understand because parallel sentences allow the readers to understand the order of the subjects and objects of a sentence. It does add more rhythm and balance. In my opinion parallel structure is important. For example,

My son not only wants ice cream but also sodas.

The sentence above does not sound rhythmic, nor does it flow easily. The correct way to word it would be, "My son wants not only ice cream but also wants soda". This way the sentence flows rhythmically, and it is easier for the reader to understand.
