1 Fall 2022 Science 1A03 Scientific Piece - Description and Rubric As a written deliverable for this course, you will write a short, sourced piece on a science topic. This piece will be created and submitted in Avenue to Learn, first as a full draft (SPD) and then edited to become the final version (SPF). Full instructions and rubric are provided below. Deadlines: 8:00PM Friday 21 October 2022 (draft), 8:00PM Monday 31 October 2022 (final). Max 600 words, submitted on Avenue to Learn as a PDF file to the assignment folder(s). You can format the page as you please, as long as it is readable and professional-looking. (Citations and references do not count towards word limit.) Citations and references will be in Harvard style (Anglia Ruskin variety). If you do not hand in a full draft on time, you will receive a zero for the piece. This item counts 20% towards your final course grade. To achieve good marks, read both these pages carefully and follow the instructions. Use everything you have learned about finding, selecting, and citing sources in class! You must find a science news story (mainstream news story, related to a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Physics, Medical, etc. field, from a newspaper or major news network - PLEASE AVOID COVID-19 NEWS ARTICLES) that was written in 2022 and based on research published in 2025 Your task is to write about that science tonic starting from the originalPLEASE AVOID COVID-19 NEWS ARTICLES) that was written in 2022 and based on research published in 2022. Your task is to write about that science topic starting from the original research paper. All your references must be drawn from peer-reviewed literature (so use the tools you have learned in class, not Google Search for random websites!). Your piece should describe what was discovered, how it relates to previous research, and what the likely outcomes and benefits will be. Your citations must include the original research article. You must also cite (including a link) the news article you found, plus at least two other relevant peer-reviewed articles. In general, 4-7 citations would be needed for a piece this size. DO NOT just summarize the research article or the news story!! Steps 1. Review all the lectures dealing with literature, sources, referencing, and academic integrity. Make notes and ensure you understand how to approach searches. 2. Identify a 2022 science news story that interests you enough that you wish to find out more about. 3. Find and access the full original research paper, not just the abstract (ask for help at the Library!). 4. Read the original research paper trying to understand what the research was about and why the journalist or news site found it important, then write that down in your own words. Whdown in your own words. When you find you are struggling to understand, look for other sources to help you. If you want to use that information, trace it back to a peer-reviewed source and then cite that. READ THE RUBRIC and DO NOT TRY TO SHORTCUT FINDING AND USING SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
