f. In "filing type" box enter 10-k; enter
g. access 2008 10-k filed on 11/20/08 and 2010 10-k filed on 11/24/10; click on "document" on left then click on first file to download 10-k (alternatively you can click on interactive data to go straight to the financial statements below) Using interactive data is not available for 2008 10-K but is for the 2010 10-K)
h. Go to consolidated balance sheet and income statement for both years (about pages 63 and 65 for 2008 and 2010, respectively)
i. Start with the 2008 10-k consolidated balance sheet and find Minority Interests; note placement on consolidated balance sheet. Then move 1 page up to the consolidated income statement and also find minority interests. Note placement in consolidated income statement. For each of these items, note the amount for the year ended 2008 and also make a note of consolidated net income (the bottom line) for 2008.
For the 2008 presentation of minority interest, the GAAP is based on purchase accounting rules including use of the language "minority interests"
j. Now access the 2010 10-K; Go to consolidated balance sheet (about page 65) and find "Noncontrolling interest". Note placement on consolidated balance sheet. This presentation follows the present GAAP guidance using the acquisition method. It may be a better idea not to use interactive data so you get a sense of what a 10-k looks like in its entirety.
K. Scroll up one page to the consolidated statement of income and find "Net income to noncontrolling interest" ; Note placement and compare the 2008 amounts in (i) above to what you see on the 2010 consolidated statement of income.
Question
