The social exchange theory is the idea that large groups are formed due to shared benefits, promoting prosocial behaviors that help the group (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2021). From an evolutionary perspective, loners would not make it. Being part of a group and contributing to the group in a helpful way encourages survival. In other words, being helpful to others is mutually beneficial and required for survival. Two ways prosocial behavior offers advantages to survival includespromoting opportunities to reproduce, and surviving by sharing resources and defense against enemies (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2021.
