We are learning that equal employment law addresses discriminatory treatment, and we understand that the law requires that both individuals and organizations not discriminate against anyone on the basis of their inclusion in any "protected categories." But it is also possible to unintentionally discriminate against someone (disparate impact) because of unseen biases, or biases of which we may not even be aware. To begin to grapple with what this means for us requires that we approach this topic in humility and with a teachable spirit. And God has much to teach us about humility! For this week's reflection, let's read and reflect upon Philippians 2:1-11, Matthew 11:28-30, Proverbs 25:27, and James 3:13-16. What does humility look like through a protected lens? And how can humility help us identify and come to terms with whatever biases we may hold?
