As senior director of communications for the Cleveland Indians, Curtis Danburg oversees corporate communications, digital media, baseball information, broadcasting, digital assets/photography and team historian. It's a tall order, but a manageable one for someone with Danburg's fondness for baseball.
"I'm blessed to have my dream job for an organization I've been passionate about since I was a little kid," says Danburg, who has been with the Indians' organization for 20 years and has held his current post for five years. "The ability to impact people and our community in a positive manner through the game of baseball" is a job perk that Danburg cherishes.
The Indians' communications department is tasked with creating content and making sure it is distributed through the various media outlets. The ultimate goal is "to disseminate that information to educate and entertain our fans," Danburg explains. Today's 24-hour news cycle means the communications department must continually search for unique, engaging stories related to the Indians.
"It is a demanding job from a time commitment standpoint, and we do work throughout the offseason preparing for the next season," Danburg says. "To me, it is all about building relationships, both internally within the organization and externally with our media, corporate partners, city officials and our fans."
This year, there was a lot for Danburg and his communications team to relay to Tribe fans and the community. A reconfigured Progressive Field was unveiled in the spring. Highlights include the addition of The Corner, an indoor-outdoor bar in right field; popular local restaurants added in the new Right Field District; removal of seats for group terraces in the upper deck; an expanded kids' clubhouse; and a centralized location for both bullpens to create a more up-close and personal fan experience. The prediction by Sports Illustrated that the Indians will win the 2015 World Series, followed by lots of twists and turns in the early season, have added to an already vast amount of Tribe-related content to disseminate.
Danburg began preparing for this type of dynamic role at an early age. He studied sports management at Bowling Green and volunteered in the university's athletic department. Before graduating, he took an internship with the Buffalo Bisons, the Indians' AAA affiliate. Focusing on athletics throughout his college career gave Danburg the experience and education needed for a job in the front office of a major league baseball team.
What it takes to succeed
"During your high school and college years, you can never get enough experience in sports," Danburg says. Building your resume is important, and so is making connections with professionals in the field. "Those people will open future doors for you in your career, as this industry is very competitive. You need to separate yourself from your peers."
