Claire is in her mid-50s. In junior high school she cut her hair. It was something that she had done when things at home weren't going well. She said it helped to "fill the void." She also wore long sleeves which hid the scars and cuts she had made herself. Later in high school, she began to smoke and started using drugs regularly. Her parents divorced and Claire reported that both of her parents seemed to abandon her emotionally. She also later reported that her father was an alcoholic who had regularly beaten her and her mother. She did poorly in school and had a low opinion of herself. She often said she was stupid and ugly, yet she was neither. Throughout her high school years, she would be gone for periods of time as a result of visits to a psychiatric facility to get help with her depression and suicidal behavior as she often threatened to kill herself. Claire became more and more unpredictable, and this caused problems with her friends. She would say things like "You're walking too fast. You don't want to be seen with me." Or "Why didn't you text me right back? Are you making plans with someone else?" When she wasn't berating her friends, she would be desperate to be around them. The "void" she described in herself became overwhelming and eventually she would shut everyone out. Claire had been married twice, and both times had been passionate, but stormy relationships often interrupted by hospitalizations. She tried to stab her first husband during a particularly violent rage. She tried a number of drugs, but mainly used alcohol to "deaden the pain."
