1. What major business processes do you find in their current business ? The textbook shows four major functions and my lecture (one page diagram) shows six or more functions. 2.Suggest how you can improve the current processes for better business operations utilize the data acquired/produced to make better decisions and/ or make customers/stakeholders become more intimate to Jose and Maria's business. After many years of successful growth, it became Taco Shop, Inc. with Jose being its CEO. 3. How would Taco shop, Inc.'s new information systems or innovation contribute to its competitive strategy, given the nature of its business? 4. What are specific management and business tools (e.g. CRM, TQM, etc.) you would apply in different situations (decisions to make, gaining efficiencies, marketing, etc.)? Illustrate those situations (be specific) and describe tools (how it applies). Process Modeling Read the following scenario and investigate ways to improve processes; to work together with external organizations, to collect necessary data; and also to consider new business opportunities. Jose and Maria's Taco Shop is a small comer restaurant that serves local residents and small businesses. The taco shop only serves 23 tables. The only employees are the owners of the taco shop, Jose and Maria. The owners are old fashioned, and they have not installed any electronic machines to take customer orders. When a customer makes an order, Jose writes the order on 2-sheet carbon-copy paper. After Jose receives money for the order, he places the money and the original order copy into a shoebox under the counter. Next, Jose takes the carbon copy of the order to the kitchen and gives it to his wife, Maria, who then hangs the order sheet near the top cabinets. While Jose is waiting for the order, he fills the soda cups for the customer. After Maria receives an order, she will take a frozen meat item (beef, chicken, or fish) from the freezer and place it on the oven to be heated. If the previous order is different from the current order, she will first clean the oven before placing the meat. For example, if the previous order was a fish taco and the current order is a beef taco, she will first clean the oven before placing the frozen beef. (She is afraid the beef will smell like fish if she does not clean the oven first.) If the previous order is the same as the current order, she will simply place the meat item onto the oven to be heated. When the order is prepared, she will wrap the food and give it to Jose, who will then give the food to the customer. The customers have a choice to dine-in or to take the food to go. In the mid-morning and mid-aftemoon, the ines at Jose and Maria's. Taco Shop are very short. However, the lines are very crowded during lunch and dinner. The lines are so long, in fact, that some customers walk away due to the long wait times. Jose has talked to Maria about possibly changing the cooking process to speed the cooking times, but Maria is very stubborn and refuses to change the cooking style she has been accustomed to for many years. In addition, Maria has also complained that Jose's handwriting is very hard to read, and Maria sometimes makes the wrong customer orders. At the end of the day, Jose takes inventory of the food supplies and places an order with his supplier, Manuel, who will arrive the following morning with the ordered supplies. Every morning. Maria takes the food supplies from Manuel and prepares the food for the day. For example, she will dice tomatoes and lettuce. Task: You are to observe the current business processes and resulting data capture/data production of a low tech restaurant (it can be any type of food restaurants)
