I have always wondered if it was true that birth order effects the way a person acts or thinks. Like are all first borns natural leaders and all only children mature for their age? I have two siblings and can see sibling position traits play out in my family. Science supports birth order effects but in small ways rather than the exaggerated way we have always heard about. But what happens when assigned birth order is changed or eliminated?

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does a change in assigned birth order make a difference in one's personality? Does the brain remember assigned birth order? My daughter was born a middle child but through adoption has grown up an only child. Was her personality formed as a middle child or as an only child?

A greater awareness of birth order is just a small piece of seeking to understand a person beyond the surface. It can help connect people who might not have anything else in common except they both are only children. In a world that is so diverse finding those common grounds helps with breaking down bias.
