Around 2000 BC, many citizens in the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes were suffering from symptoms of an unknown, hemorrhagic disease. They believed that the gods were punishing them. Amunet, a priestess well ahead of her time, suspected that the gods had nothing to do with the current disease situation. She had observed that there were large populations of rats in certain areas where there also seemed to be large numbers of people with the disease. She sent messengers out into the city to interview as many people as they could find who had the disease, and to interview an equal number of people who were healthy. The messengers found 500 people who were ill and 500 who were not and asked each person about rats in their neighborhood.
