Aquaculture is a great industry in Canada. Fish farms bring a notable amount of revenue and create many job opportunities. More than 16,000 Canadians are directly and indirectly employed in aquaculture. "Aquaculture represents about a third of Canada's total fisheries value and about 20% of total seafood production. The value of aquaculture production has increased by 63% over the last ten years, to $962 million in 2013 from $591 million in 2003. In fact, Canadian production has increased four-fold since the early nineties.

British Columbia is the fourth largest producer of salmon in the world, and Canada's leader in aquaculture production with 52.3% of total production value. However, as any other Business, it can be affected by many external factors. Stakeholders can influence decisions and the future of the business. Compliance with environmental regulation is also fundamental. When farmed salmon escapes into the wild, interbreed can occur if they are the same species, as in New Brunswick, decreasing genetic diversity of wild salmon. Sea lice is also commonly transferred from local wild fish populations to the farmed fish, and can increase to epidemic levels.
