1. You and your spouse are having dinner out one evening. AS usual, you both discuss events from the day at work. Frustrated, you begin sharing with your spouse, "l had this one patient today, Sharon Eckels, who nearly put me over the edge. She came into the pharmacy and handed us her empty bottle for. her antipsychotics, and demanded that we refill it right away. Why can't people call ahead before they run completely out?? "Thats ridiculous" your spouse responds. It just so happens that Mr. Eckels, a prominent attorney in the community, is having dinner with a client at a nearby table, and they both overhear your comments. Initially embarassed, Mr.Eckels is now outraged by the breach of patient confidentiality. a. What Law has been broken? b. Do The Eckels have a legitimate lawsuit against you? c.could you or the pharmacy be liable ? d. What could have been a more appropriate way to discuss your frustrations? 2.A young man comes into the pharmacy and asks to purchase a box of syringes. When you inquire if he has a prescription for insulin or syringes on file at the pharmacy, he quickly says that he usually fills his prescription at another pharmacy. You also notice that he has not requested a specific size or gauge of syringe. Your intuition tells you that this young man wants to purchase syringes for recreational drug use. If you sell him the syringes, it could be argued that you are enabling his drug use. However, it could also be argued that if you do not sell him the syringes , he will likely still continues to abuse drugs, possibly with dirty or used syringes. A. Would you sell the young man the syringes why or why not? 3. During the peak of cold and flu season, the manufacturer of one of the best over-the-counter remedies is back-ordered on its products, with an expected delay of six weeks for shipments. You are aware that all the other pharmacies in town are already completely out of stock on this product, but your pharmacy has one package left. An elderly woman comes into the pharmacy, clearly suffering from a nasty cold, to ask you if you have any of the medicine available. You promised your next door neighbor that you would hold the last package for the family; although you have not yet gotten sick, they want to have the medicine on hand. A. Would you sell to the elderly woman or hold it for your neighbor. 3. Overloaded with duties, pharmacy technician 1 asks pharmacy technician 2 to take care of these duties. Two hours later, the pharmacist is outraged to discover that vials have not been restocked nor has the trash been taken out. An argument ensues.
