13. There is much discussion in the news about raising the minimum wage. Some say that raising the minimum wage is necessary for people to earn a decent living. Others argue that raising the minimum wage discriminates against people (particularly young people and minorities) who have limited skills. The high minimum wage deters employers from giving those people the beginning work experiences with which they can acquire the skills to make them more valuable employees and thereby boost their future earning potential. Moreover, these same people argue, the minimum wage was not meant to be the average wage or living wage which would support the average family.
