1.Find a news storyposted within the lastone year that involves aCanadian legal case.The case can be in any area of law (e.g. criminal, constitutional, civil, etc.). A media story should contain enough detail to address the questions below (you are free to consult multiple media sources about the story if needed).

2.Critically analyzethe story - often media stories miss important points or even get the law wrong. You may need to a small amount of independent research to achieve this. Provide a two-page memo on this case answering the following questions:

(a)What level of court is involved? Is it an appeal from an earlier case or is it a trial? Describe how the parties ended up in court - who brought the action? What is the basis for the action? What is known about any potential defence?

(b)What are thelegal issues of the case (e.g. might the case change the existing law? What is controversial about the case that invites public interest?)

(c)Are the legal issues of aprocedural (i.e. dealing with the process of law) or asubstantive (i.e. dealing with the substance of the law) nature? Or are they mixed?

(d)Are there any moral issues that are distinct from the legal issues? Do you have different opinions about how the case should be resolved?
