1.Using the data provided by Problem 5 on page 385 (3rd edition) or page 386 (4th edition) of your book, test the hypothesis that "Body Weight" is related to "Self-esteem". Use a = .05.Follow the procedure outlined by this lab.
2. SPSS to analyze the data on page 403 (3rd edition) or page 405 (4th edition) of your book using Spearman rank order correlation. (A "How To" for Spearman rank order correlation can be found below.) Test the hypothesis that "Physical Attractiveness" is related to "Popularity". Test this hypothesis separately for the girls and the boys. Use a = .05.Follow the procedure outlined by the lab. Comment on the difference between the results for the boys and the girls. For added fun, try fitting the data with both a line and a curve to see what fits the best!
Hint for running Spearman rank order correlation.
The Pearson correlation coefficient is used to describe interval or ratio data, and the Spearman rank order correlation is used to analyze ordinal data, see text, p. 396 (3rd edition) or p. 398 (4th edition) for more information. To run a Spearman rank order correlation in SPSS, follow these instructions:
-Make sure you are in the "Data Editor" window.
-Click on "Analyze", select "Correlate", and click on "Bivariate..."
-Move both variables ("Physical Attractiveness" and "Popularity") into the "Variables" field. (do t his separately for boys and girls)
-Un-select "Pearson" and select "Spearman".
-Click on the OPTION button.
-Under "Statistics" field, you cannot select the "Means and standard deviations" option. These statistics don't make sense for ordinal measures.
-Click on the CONTINUE button.
-Click on the PASTE button and run the pasted command.
What to turn in:
Please include all tables and plots obtained in your hypothesis test.
For each problem, list clearly all 5 steps (just as exemplified in this lab) including the SPSS correlation coefficient output in a word document.
