2) (20pts) Wind Chill Factors and Exposure Time to Suffer 1st Degree Frostbite The US has had record cold temperatures in recent weeks. We are lucky living in Oregon because life is wet and wonderful, but not bitter cold! The wind chill factor is an effective skin temperature, determined using a multivariable algorithm involving the absolute air temperature and wind speed (convection heat transfer coefficient) to arrive at the skin temperature. The established criteria for a person to suffer 1" degree frostbite (skin turns black) on any portion of exposed skin is: Temp = 0C at 5mm below skin surface. Physical Properties Skin/Tissue: conductivity (k) = 0.35 W/m-K; heat capacity (Cp) = 3800 J/kg-K; density (p) of 1005 kg/m. Question: We want to determine the time to suffer 1" degree frostbite (skin turns black). a) Sketch and label the problem. State all Assumptions. List Given information. b) What is the thermal diffusivity (a) of the skin tissue? c) How long can a person stay outside with a -40C wind chill factor before suffering 1st degree frostbite
