2 (a) Figure 1 shows a mobile phone concept. The mobile phone is upgradable thanks to its modular design with customizable, removable parts and an ingenious folding structure, It is designed to be easily and intuitively fixed/upgraded without tools. The dimensions of the phone are approximately 120 mm (length) x 65 mm (width) x 10 mm (thickness). Its selling price is expected to be about S$750. Discuss whether this is a good design in terms of the five (5) goals of industrial design as suggested by Henry Dreyfuss, i.e. Utility, Appearance, Ease of Maintenance, Low Costs, and Communication. State all your assumptions clearly. (10 marks) The phone will show the user how it works inside. Clip-system is adopted for securing the components to the phone structure, without glue or screws. Figure 1: A mobile phone concept -1. (b) Refer to Figure 1, discuss briefly the mobile phone conceptual design from the viewpoint of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA). State all assumptions made. () Predict the revenue loss to a refrigerator manufacturer if the manufacturer chooses to defer a planned introduction of a refrigerator with a product life cycle of 6 years into the marketplace by 6 months due to a major safety recall campaign. Assume that after the planned launch date the market is expected to have a linear increase for the first 2.5 years and a linear decline for the following 3.5 years. In addition, the market increase rate is the same for the delayed launch and that the peak revenue point occurs at the date first predicted. (7 marks) 2 (a) Figure 1 shows a mobile phone concept.
