2. A researcher is testing the effectiveness of the Atkins (high protein, low carbohydrate) diet for improving health. This diet plan is purported to reduce weight, reduce blood sugar, reduce high blood pressure, reduce "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and increase "good" (HDL) cholesterol. The research involves a Before - After study with 12 subjects. Each subject is measured for these 5 variables before starting the diet, and again after following the diet for 12 weeks. Separate paired t-tests are applied to the data for each of these variables to determine if there is evidence that the diet had an effect on any of the above-mentioned variables. The results of these t-tests are presented below. To test the global Null hypothesis that the Atkins diet had no effect, the investigator believes he should control experiement-wise Type I error rate to a = 0.05 by using the sequential Bonferroni procedure. Perform this procedure: (a) put the t-test results in the proper order in the table below, (b) compute the critical Type I error rate a* for each of the t-tests, and (c) state your conclusion for each test and with regard to the overall Null hypothesis. p-Values From Paired t-Tests Weight Blood Sugar Blood Pressure LDL Cholesterol HDL Cholesterol p = 0.03 p = 0.001 P = 0.045 P = 0.075 p = 0.01 Variable p-value Ntests d Conclusion
