2. A student came to the lab to perform the bromination of acetanilide experiment, but forgot to prepare the step by step procedure in the the prelab notebook. The student was unsure on what to do, but still added the reagents in the following order: 1) 100 mg acetanilide, 2) 3 mL sodium bisulfite, 3) 16 drops bromine/acetic solution, 4) 20 drops water. Then the student left the vial stirring for 10 minutes and then put it in an ice bath. After filtering the product, the student performed an NMR spectrum and found 3 distinct NMR signals (integration and multiplicity in parentheses) 8H: 2.1 ppm (3H, singlet), 7.37 ppm (5H, multiplet), 7.9 ppm (1H, broad singlet). Answer the following questions: a) What was wrong in the order in which the student used the reagents? In particular, which reagent was not added in the correct order, and when should have been used instead? b) Clearly explain why was important to add the reagent mentioned in question a) in a different order? What reaction occurred in the student vial that affected the main reaction result? Give a detailed explanation to get the points, a short sentence is not enough to answer. c) Was the obtained NMR correct according to the product desired for this reaction? Answer yes or not and clearly describe what was the signal that confirmed the identity of the obtained product, and how that signal can be used to show that the product obtained was the correct or not
