A current labor management issue involves minor league baseball players. These players have cited low pay and poor working conditions for many years and have expressed interest in joining the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) to assist them in negotiations. Because more than 50% of the minor league players signed union authorization cards indicating they wanted to join, Major League Baseball (MLB) has recently recognized the MLBPA as the bargaining representative of minor league players. Having the ability to join this union can help the minor league players with their issues. Issues may be easier to resolve with a bargaining unit in place.

If the minor league players join the MLBPA and it is able to negotiate on the behalf of the players who join the union, they may be able to attain better wages and working conditions. With inflation these days, the players may also be able to negotiate better cost-of-living adjustments. Being a part of the MLBPA may also afford better grievance procedures to the minor league players as this will provide a union shop steward to the players. Being able to join the union may also assist with mediation and arbitration for the players if grievance procedures are not successful. With the players joining the MLBPA and obtaining representation, it may also make management for minor league players more aware of the seriousness of the situation.
