(20) A recent Economist article ("Your Money or Your Life", 25 April) bore the subtitle "Middlemen are profiting from Gazans' desperation" and discusses the convoluted steps, and sizeable payments, that people are paying to individuals connected to the Egyptian government to get their names on the lists of those who are permitted to use the Rafah crossing into Egypt. The article states that before the Palestinian-Israeli war the price for getting on these lists was $700 US (at current exchange rates) but has soared to $5,000 US recently. Using our tools, explain this price rise. Then assess whether aid agencies and even the United Nations Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) should work to stamp out these fee-for-escape schemes or mimic them (assuming that these groups can only get a fixed number of people out)
