Chick-fil-A is a privately held restaurant chain based in Hapeville, Georgia. The chain was founded by S. Truett Cathy in 1946 under the name Dwarf Grill, and changed to its current name in 1967 when they opened their first restaurant in a food court in Greenbriar Mall in an Atlanta suburb. The company is currently headquartered in College Park, Georgia, and continues to be owned and operated by the Cathy family. At 2,363 locations, Chick-fil-A is the largest fast food chain to specialize in chicken sandwiches and one of the largest chains overall in the United States. The company is well known for its successful Eat Mor Chikin cows, an advertising campaign started in 1995. Less well-known is the fact that their mascot, the chicken appearing the companys logo, is named Doodles.1 Chick-fil-As business model is to focus on a simple menu built around its signature grade A quality chicken sandwich. They can be found inside airports, malls, on college campuses, and in stand-alone stores in 47 states. They pioneered the concept of combining shopping and eating when they opened their Greenbriar Mall location.2 The company is known for its founders values. Truett Cathy, who died in 2014, was a devout Southern Baptist. The companys stated purpose is, To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A. One of the most visible signs of this religious commitment is the companys policy of closing their restaurants on Sundays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In 2012, COO Dan Cathy made a number of public statements opposing same-sex marriage. Following those comments, there were reports of the company supporting organizations that had apparent opposition to LGBTQ rights. The public reacted by either boycotting or supporting the restaurant, depending on their ideological view. A month following the controversy, Chick-fil-A released a statement stating, Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.3 A review of their tax filings since then show a withdrawal of funding from most organizations seen as anti-LGBTQ. In November 2019, Chick-fil-A stopped supporting The Salvation Army (which had a history of opposing same-sex marriage) and began funding a pro-LGBTQ charitable group that provides food and shelter to runaway and homeless young adults.3 1.
