3) [34+8 points extra credit] An ideal Rankine cycle is used in a coal-fired power plant. The pump and turbine are adiabatic. The evaporator and condenser are constant-pressure. All devices are internally reversible and steady state. Neglect kinetic and potential energy changes. The working fluid is H2O. Use TEST. Please use the state numbering from Figure 8.2 in the textbook. The boiler operates at 20 bar. The condenser operates at 0.5 bar. The condenser exit is saturated liquid; the boiler exit is at 240 C. a) Use TEST to find the enthalpy and entropy at each state and find specific volume and temperature at the condenser exit. b) Use the results of a) to find W/m and Q/m for each device (boiler, turbine, condenser, pump). Please use the MechE sign convention, even though chapter 8 does not consistently do this. c) THIS SECTION IS EXTRA CREDIT, WORTH 8 POINTS. Use appropriate expressions (integrals) from section 6.13 to check your results from b) for the pump and condenser. Find both W/m and Q/m for pump and condenser using the methods of Section 6.13. In the case of the pump, assume v-constant at the inlet value from a). This is a form of the incompressible substance approximation. d) Find the efficiency of the cycle.
