3) A faith community with several thousand followers needs to appoint a religious leader as head of the faith organisation. The appointee will be known as a bishop, and under church rules the bishop must be a male and must be married. The appointee will be required to lead the faith community and organise religious services, supervise existing workers in the church, and generally run the administrative side of the church community. The role will require the bishop to be involved in full time duties.

The bishop is appointed for a period of five years, and is referred to as 'the spiritual leader' and another part of the church will provide a payment for his living expenses, family and various other needs he has. There is no formal agreement as to how much he is to receive or his entitlements, given the nature of his appointment.

After some three years, there has been some significant disagreements between the community and the appointed bishop. The bishop wishes to leave his position but is requesting various payments such as holiday pay, and other payments normally associated with employment.

The community has refused to pay anything further to the bishop. They claim he is a spiritual leader, the position is an honorary one, and there was never a formal contract, nor any intention to form an enforceable contract with benefits.
