3. A psychologist would like to examine the effects of prior experience on learning a new task. Two sample groups of rats were compared. One group had participated in a variety of learning experiments over the past 4 months, and the other group had just arrived at the psychology department with no prior research experience. All the rats were tested on a discrimination learning problem and the psychologist recorded the number of errors each animal made before it solved the problem. The data are as follows: (85 pts. total) Experienced rats: 8, 9, 7, 7, 9, 7, 10, 9, 8, 6, 9, 6, 6, 11, 6, 6 Inexperienced rats: 11, 12, 10, 13, 10, 9, 13, 10, 11, 12, 14, 10, 13, 14, 13, 14 a. What are the independent and dependent variables in the overall study (i.e., the operational definitions in the experiment)? (5 pts.) b. Construct a simple frequency table for each group (10 pts) C. Be sure to include frequency and percentage frequency. Find the mean, median, and mode for the data from each of the two groups of rats (25 pts). d. Find the range, variance, and standard deviation of the data from each of the two groups of rats (25 pts). e. FOR THE INEXPERIENCED RAT GROUP ONLY: (1) calculate the z- score for each Error score in order to standardize the distribution. And (2) Are the standardized scores equal on either side of the mean? Why or why not? (25 pts)
