3) Craps involve tossing two dice at a time. Each die has six sides with numbers 1-6 on them. When the dice come to rest you total the top numbers on the two dice. There are 36 possible outcomes but only 11 possible totals. To begin, you shake, say some mantra, and "toss" the dice. This diagram shows what the win and lose possibilities are on the first "toss". If you get a green number total you WIN!. If you get a red number total you LOSE! If you get any other number you toss the dice again. HOWEVER, the red AND green numbers are now LOSERS. You MUST get a repeat of the number you got on your first toss to win.

  • The green 7 and 11 WIN if on the first toss. What is the probability of that happening?
  • The red 2, 3, and 12 are called "craps" and you LOSE. What is the probability of that happening?
  • If you throw ANY other total (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) you keep going and toss the dice again. Now, it gets serious.
  • What is the probability of a 4 or 10, 5 or 9, 6 or 8? (It's different odds).
  • Your goal on the second toss is to get this same total you got on the first toss - you get it you win. BUT, if you toss a 2, 3, 12, or 7 (on any subsequent toss) you LOSE. What are the odds of getting a 2, 3, 12, 7, or 11? See how the odds favor the house even more on the second toss?
