3. Geometry (6 pts) Miss Ayana takes her 5th grade class outside for recess. She stands in the center of a "circle" and all her 24 students stand the same distance from Miss Ayana and they also stand an equal distance from each other (see Figure 1). Miss Ayana gives Bradley ("B") a ball of yarn and challenges her students to figure out which students to throw it to so when the ball of yarn ends up with Bradley again, the shape made is a regular polygon. For example, Bradley throws to student F who throws it to students Q and back to Bradley. This is NOT a regular polygon. The yarn cannot cross itself and cannot be thrown to Miss Ayana (but could go over / by her). Once they made one regular polygon, they start over at Bradley and try to make a new regular polygon. How many different regular polygons can the students make? Label each polygon with the first letter of the students' name in the order the yarn is thrown to that student. A non-example would be polygon BFQ (no need to write B at the end, it is understood the ball of yarn ends up with Bradley). B X W. F U Miss A T H S R K O N M Figure 1 Understanding the problem: Devising a plan: Carrying out the plan (show all work!): Looking back: Page 3 of 9
