Build the following circuit (N.B. you may be need to use two switches instead of 1 to accomplish this): Make the resistor be 120.0 Q, the battery 12.0 V, and the capacitor 0.20 F. a) Begin by closing the switch on the switch which places the battery and resistor in series with the capacitor, so that the capacitor is being charged. b) You want to time how long until the voltage drop across the resistor falls from 12.0 V to 3.0 V (=1/4 of the initial 12.0 V). T is is a quarter life'sthat is, two half-lives'worth of decay. Use this to compute your ponential decay time constant, T. c) You should also record (e.g. via screen capture) the voltage chart for the capacitor to verify whether it is credibly an exponential rise.* Note that the voltage chart works similarly to a volt-meter: it should be placed in parallel with the circuit element that it is measuring. cl) Allow the voltage across the resistor to reach 0 V (you can expedite this by temporarily changing the resistance to 0), then open this switch and instead close the switch connecting the wire to the battery-less capacitor, so that the capacitor discharges. Repeat the measurements (and calculation) in parts b) and c). You voltage values will now be negative, unless you switch the leads of the voltmeter. *A more rigorous, but also more time-consuming version, would be to create the rise and decay charts by recording the voltage on the capacitor after every 2-3 seconds. If you are going to do this. then it might help to put a second 120 Q resistor in series with the first (which will give you 240 Q of total resistance)
