3. Supersonic Vehicle Let us compare operation of ramjet and scramjet modes of propulsion. A supersonic vehicle uses oblique shocks to produce flow into a constant area duct with the following parameters: M = 2.25, T = 530 K, and p = 1.25 bar. Compare two cases: a) a normal shock followed by heat addition, and b) heat addition only. Upon leaving the duct, the flow is then expanded to an exit pressure of 1 kPa. Given q = 0.28 MJ/kg, determine the following for both processes: (a) The total pressure at the exit, and its ratio with the total pressure at the duct inlet. (b) The Mach number, temperature and velocity at the exit, after an isentropic ex- pansion to p 1 kPa. (c) Comment on which process generated the most entropy (hint: you do not need to calculate this directly), and which process resulted in the highest exit velocity.
