Now she's at home checking her email on her laptop. Later, she might take a nap or pick her son up from school. I don't count hours. I don't have hours, which is fantastic. I'm kind of a night owl, so I enjoy my mornings when it's a little bit more low key, and then at night, after my son goes to sleep, I can log on and do my work, and I'm most productive at night, so it's worked out really, really well. McDevitt still goes to the office for meetings, but they're rare and also optional under Best Buy's Results Only Work Environment, known as ROWE. It's not how many hours someone puts in or how many hours someone is putting in face time at the office. It's are they getting their work done, and if the answer to that question is yes, that's all that needs to be considered. Ressler and human resources colleague Jody Thompson came up with ROWE to solve a big problem at Best Buy. Top performers were jumping ship, and an employee survey found out why. Employees said supervisors were constantly looking over their shoulders and didn't trust them to just do their jobs. Ressler and Thompson said stressed out employees needed a change. They considered flex time a joke, so they started from scratch. The way that I've thought about work my whole life, I'm changing that notion now, so work isn't a place I go, it's something I do, for example. And when you wake up in the morning and it doesn't matter what day of the week it is and you're not thinking, "Well, work has to start on Monday and end on Friday." They tested the concept on a few small groups. One of those was under John Thompson, a former GE executive who was big on face time. I said there was just no way that folks are going to disappear off of this campus and we're still going to keep motoring along, stuff is going to get done hey, without my personal inspection, mind you things will still get done, and I found out that I was wrong and that things got done, probably got 1/2 3/23/2016 00:02:08 00:02:11 00:02:13 00:02:16 00:02:18 00:02:21 00:02:25 00:02:29 00:02:32 00:02:36 00:02:38 00:02:40 00:02:42 00:02:44 00:02:45 00:02:47 00:02:49 00:02:51 00:02:53 00:02:55 00:02:56 00:02:59 Transcript Page done better without my inspection. Thompson became a believer when productivity jumped by onethird and top performers began sticking around. I have no doubt at all that we're going to create new ways of working to fit the 21st Century, to help people have work work for both their companies and for themselves. By the end of 2007, all 4,000 employees at Best Buy headquarters will be on the ROWE flexible schedule. Everybody wants to work for Best Buy and be a part of ResultsOnly Work Environment. They're definitely constantly asking, "Well, where are you today? Why aren't you in the office?" Questions you'd expect a boss to ask, but at Best Buy, for the most part, they don't anymore.
