Derrick Yates Derrick is a twelve-year-old placed in a class of high- average and gifted fifth graders, although his aca- demic skills are at about third-grade level. He has been known as a terror, as unmanageable, by every teacher he has had in his school career. He is large for his age and is described as a "scary kid" with crooked, bucked teeth, a chilling laugh, and an odd look in his eyes. Because of his disruptive behavior, he has been allowed to attend school for only half days for protracted periods. The school's teacher assistance team has recommended that he be evalu- ated for possible special education services. At home, Derrick's behavior is also highly prob- lematic, threatening, and intimidating. His mother and father are divorced, and Derrick lives with his mother and younger sister and brother. He is enraged about the divorce and blames his mother for the family's breakup. The school social worker reports that Derrick killed the family dog with a butcher knife-beheaded and dismembered the dog and scattered the parts in the yard. His mother has had locks installed on the kitchen drawers for fear that Derrick would use knives and other kitchen utensils to harm her or his siblings. She has also had double locks installed on her bedroom door and lets the two younger children sleep with her for fear of Derrick. She reports that in a fit of rage stemming from her not asking him to talk with his father (who had called regarding child support) on the phone, Derrick one night assaulted her bedroom door with a butcher knife. Derrick's mother is at her wit's end, terrified of him and not able to get help from social services or mental health services. Derrick's teacher this year is an experienced spe- cial educator who asked for reassignment to a gen- eral education classroom. Although she is well aware of Derrick's history, she has agreed to take Derrick in her class until the evaluation for special education is completed. Derrick knows that teachers and other students are afraid of him. He says that he likes to do mean things and glories in his bad reputation. However, for the first few days of this school year, his teacher has kept her cool, seemed unafraid of him, and observed no serious misbehavior. Buddy is one of the most unpleasant students I've met in my ten years of teaching. He's unpleasant physically and psychologically. He's always dirty and smelly, and the language he uses is hostile, mean, and unac- ceptable in polite society. Most of the time he makes other kids, as well as adults, want to get away from him as fast as possible and stay away from him as much as possible. I suppose you could describe this as just plain obnoxious. Amazingly, though, he's really a nice kid sometimes. But, generally, it's hard to imagine a more repulsive twelve-year-old than Buddy, so it's no wonder he's nobody's buddy in spite of his name.
