5. (12 points, 20min ) You are required to make a 250ml solution of 0.15M(AT) TRIS to use as a buffer to perform a biochemical experiment at pH 7.5. You can assume the pKa for TRIS is 8.1 and that you only have the fully protonated form of Tris in your lab, i.e. you cannot mix the acid and its conjugate base to make the buffer. i) What is the structure of Tris (please use the internet) (1 pt) ii) Sketch a titration curve for Tris ( 4 pts). Sketch means a drawing by hand, just be sure to capture the important features of the curve and to have the correct scale on each axis. iii) How many moles of Tris would you need for your buffer solution (1 pt)? iv) Why does your answer to part iii) not depend on the pH of the solution ( 2pts )? v) Calculate the number of equivalents of HCl (or NaOH ) that you would need to adjust the pH of the solution. Briefly explain your choice of HCl (or NaOH ) (4 pts)
